In the 13 Silent Night locations in SalzburgerLand, Tirol and in Upper Austria, many atmospheric, pre-Christmas events took place. Many of them had to do with the 200-year anniversary of “Silent Night”. Others, on the other hand, were traditional events such as concerts, Christmas markets or nativity exhibitions.
Christmas romance at Stille-Nacht-Platz (Silent Night Square)
Oberndorf and Laufen offered an unforgettable experience: A tour of two Christmas markets, each one on different sides of the Salzach river, but connected by a bridge and by the historic two-town tour. At the Silent Night Square adjacent to the famous Silent Night Chapel and in Laufen town park, visitors were able to enjoy the excitement of the Christmas market and an attractive supporting programme with tower trumpeters and horse-carriage rides.

Historical Silent Night pageant “Yearning for Peace in the World”
The historical pageant in Oberndorf/Laufen impressively told the story of how the world-famous song “Silent Night! Holy Night!” came into existence. Visitors experienced an advent singing production as a dramatic performance featuring many advent songs and festive music from the region. The show started in the midst of the romantic festive atmosphere of the Christmas market at the Silent Night Square in Oberndorf, in front of the famous chapel. After a lantern march to Laufen on the Silent Night theme trail, visitors enjoyed the performance of the historical Silent Night pageant in the Salzach hall in Laufen.

Dramatic tour with the actor Heimo Thiel in the role of the famous composer and choirmaster Franz Xaver Gruber. Guests experienced an entertaining sightseeing tour through the city for the entire family.

Silent Night Christmas Wagrain
During the entire pre-Christmas period, there was just so much on offer at Wagrain-Kleinarl. Festively cosy Christmas markets with baking for children took place on the 1st and on the 8th of December 2018. Advent concerts, readings, torch-lit hikes and horse-drawn sled rides also took place in Wagrain. On the 8th of December, visitors to the Christmas post office in Karl-Heinrich-Waggerl House were able to festively decorate their Christmas mail. On the 4th of December 2018 at 10.00am the “Singing at the Joseph Mohr grave” took place and on the 05th of December 2018 at 10.00am visitors experienced the guided Silent Night cultural walk through Wagrain and learned more about Joseph Mohr, Karl Heinrich Waggerl and the history of Wagrain.

Christmas market in Mariapfarr
Christmas decorations, artistic handicrafts, a nativity scene with real animals, traditional brass-band musicians (Weisenbläser) and fine delicious treats from Lungau awaited the visitors to the Christmas market in Mariapfarr.

Special post office at Silent Night Square in Oberndorf
The special, all-year-round Silent Night post office in Oberndorf has existed since 1968. Besides the Christkindl in Steyr, it is the second most important one in Austria. Visitors are able to send their Christmas cards and letters throughout the world using the special stamps and postmarks.

Special Exhibition “Silent Night 200 – History. Message. Present.”
The special exhibition is dedicated to the history, message and present of the song in six chapters – based on the six verses. It also addresses the immaterial character of the song as a piece of cultural heritage.

At the 2018 Salzburg Advent Festival, all three initiatives unite in a special relationship. The Salzburg Advent Festival took place on the world-famous stage of the Salzburg Festival at the Großes Festspielhaus, focusing on the genesis of Silent Night. Advent concerts in St. Peter
While at school, Joseph Mohr was a singer and violinist in the university choirs and in the Benedictine Monastery St. Peter in Salzburg. During the pre-Christmas period, Advent concerts full of festive atmosphere were performed in the oldest monastery in Salzburg, featuring chamber music from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and other composers, as well as Advent and Christmas songs.

Salzburger Christkindlmarkt at Dom- and Residenzplatz
The traditional Salzburger Christkindlmarkt is one of the most beautiful and oldest christmas markets of the world. The specific feature is the christmas tree at Residenplatz, that is provided every year by a different Silent-Night-Region. In 2017 the christmas tree had its’ origin in Lamprechshausen/Anthering. Oberndorf provided the tree for the anniversary year 2018.

Klöpfelsingen (Traditional carol singing on Thursdays during the Advent period) in Mayrhofen
The Männergesangverein Mayrhofen (Mayrhofen male choral society) and Bundesmusikkapelle Mayrhofen (brass band) were “Klöpfelsingen” in 2018 at Mayrhofen’s most beautiful places and squares and performed their songs and melodies to the public. In Hollenzen, the Village glowed in a beautiful glance. The men and brass-music musicians began their performance for locals and guests alike at 6.30 pm.

“Altstadt Steyr” Christmas market
The unique ambiance of the Christmas town Steyr was underlined during the Christmas period with the wonderfully festive atmosphere at the Christmas market in “Altstadt Steyr” at the town’s historical square.

Steyrer Kripperl (Steyr Nativity Pageant)
Since in and around the year 1850, there were two wandering Nativity pageants in the Steyr area, which performed pieces of theatre in the taverns and public houses. It can be assumed that both these Nativity pageant groups merged to create the Steyrer Kripperl at a later stage. On the under-stage area with the stall in Bethlehem, religious scenes were played out. On the middle stage were the houses of the trades people and retail traders. The upper stage showed Steyr as a Biedermeieresque nativity town and was the stage on which worldly happenings played out.

Guests travelled on the steam locomotives of the Steyrtal museum train through the romantic landscapes of the Steyr valley from Steyr to Grünburg and into the Christmas calendar village Steinbach on the Steyr.

Blacksmiths showed their skills with working metal at the fire and they let the sparks fly at the town square.

In 2018 the Advent in Garsten showed a special exhibition about the debut performance of the worlds’ song of peace “Silent Night! Holy Night!”. The exhibit was embedded in the atmospheric ambience of the traditional advent market.
