REVIEW – Salzburg and SalzburgerLand

Christkindl market at Domplatz square

With its more than 525-year history and around 100 exhibitors, the Salzburg Christkindlmarkt is one of the oldest and most beautiful Advent markets in the world. From 22 November to 26 December 2018, numerous national culture and traditional events enriched the programme with free choir singing, trumpet fanfares and visits of the “Christkindl”.

Hellbrunn Advent Magic

The castle front was a giant Advent calendar, 400 Christmas trees with 13,000 red balls and an eight-metre tall Christmas angel: The Hellbrunn Advent Magic opened a world full of magic and fantasy from 22 November to 24 December 2018. In the “Kinderweihnachtswelt” (“Children’s Christmas World”), children were enchanted during the lead-up to Christmas.

Wolfgangsee Advent

The 11 metre high Advent candle of St. Gilgen, the comet of Strobl and the peace light lantern of St. Wolfgang show ships the way across Wolfgangsee lake. The view on the markets from the water is just as charming as the markets themselves. From 23 November to 23 December 2018, the magic of the Salzkammergut region was unfolded here.

Salzburger Mountain Advent

The ambitious mountain advent in the Grossarl valley created a conscious counter-world to the hectic prehistoric pastimes: On the four Advent weekends, visitors each Friday to Sunday enjoyed the mysticism of the wintry mountain scenery and the special atmosphere with Krippenweg, Christmas forest, Engerl post office, Christkindwerkstatt, gingerbread and burnt almonds.

St. Johann Light Advent

From 22 November to 23 December 2018, the illuminated Pongau Cathedral in St. Johann was the backdrop for the light Advent. Light installations, Pongau region delicacies, craftsmanship, lots of music and a stylish crystal lounge showed visitors an Alpine Christmas wonderland, reminiscent of childhood dreams.

Katschberg Advent Trail

“Christmas at 1,750 metres’ height” promised the seven-kilometre-long Katschberg Advent trail which could be hiked four times a week between 28 November and 23 December 2018. Untouched nature awaited guests with music, Lungau region culinary treats and entertainment in the barns at various stations.

REVIEW – Tirol

Tirolean mountain Christmas at Lake Achensee

At the Tirolean mountain Christmas in Achenkirch you could have learned more about old customs at Lake Achensee from 24th of November to the 27th of December 2018. It took place already for the 19th time in the historic Sixenhof, the Local History Museum Achental. Life-size figures, living animals, Alpine stories about the birth of Christ or the special fruit bread by the local bakers made the “Bergweihnacht” unforgettable in the centuries-old stable at Sixenhof. Visitors experienced a special exhibition about the national singer Ludwig Rainer. Opening hours were: Saturdays, Sundays and on public holidays from 1 till 5 pm.

Further highlights were the “Seeweihnacht” at Achensee, the Advent tour with the “Achenseeschiff” as well as the “Museumsweihnacht” at the Achensee Museum in Maurach. Please find more information here.

Mayrhofner Advent

The “Waldfestplatz” in Mayrhofen turned the Advent season into a very special experience. The focus was on traditions and ancient customs and regional specialities could be tasted at cozy fireplaces. The market was open every weekend in December as well as on 8 December 2018 from 5 till 9 pm.

Rattenberg Advent

Austria’s smallest town liked to forgo the well-known Christmas market stalls and the associated hustle and bustle during the Advent season. Rather, Visitors were enchanted by the many candle lights, the crackling fireplaces and the particularly festive atmosphere. Instead of the stalls, Rattenberg kept its famous glass art shops open, while local musicians and artists contributed to the overall presentation. The main programme could be experienced every Advent Saturday and was also open every Friday and Sunday during the pre-Christmas period last year.

Advent market and Christmas Magic in Kufstein

Visitors experienced the Advent season in a historial and specatcular ambience at the fortress in Kufstein. Traditions and nativeness were key at this Advent market and Children took part at the special Christmas bakeshop. The market was open every weekend during the Christmas season from 11 till 6 pm. Additionally, the Christmas market at the “Stadtpark” offered a varied programme for the entire family.

Innsbruck Christmas mountain festivities

From 15 November 2018 to 6 January 2019, the Innsbruck Christmas mountain festivities took place every day from 11 am to 9 pm. A total of six Advent markets invited you to get together, stroll around and enjoy. The oldest Christmas market took place in front of the Goldenes Dachl (the Golden Roof), the highest is at Hungerburg with a magnificent panoramic view of the city. Especially the advent market at the market place was a wonderful option for families.

Advent market in Hall

An over-dimensional Advent calendar on the facades of the medieval town centre, Advent music with brass bands and choirs, as well as a delightful children’s programme with fairy tales, fire shows and handicraft workshops awaited visitors at the Advent market in Hall from 23 November to 24 December 2018.

Kitzbühel Christmas market

From 28 November to 26 December 2018, the glamorous sports town Kitzbühel was all about peace and joy. The Programme highlight was the concert of the “Wiltener Sängerknaben” on 7 December 2018 from 4.30 till 6.00 pm.

Lienz Advent Season

In East Tirol, traditions and customs became especially important during the Advent season. The traditional Krampus Run was a particular favourite in Lienz for centuries. Those who prefered it a little quieter could experience the nativity scene exhibition at Liebburg Castle or join a watchman on a night voyage back in time through the town’s alleyways — multilingual guided tours were available. Open daily last year from 23 November until Christmas Eve 2018.

St. Johann Christmas Market

The people of St. Johann like their pre-Christmas period both cosy as well as contemplative. You could learn old handicrafts, like Advent wreath binding or needle felting, whilst the Christmas bakery and tinker stations offered plenty of excitement for younger visitors. The cosy Christmas market was open every weekend of the Advent (Friday to Sunday) as well as on 24 December 2018.

REVIEW – Upper Austria

Wolfgangsee Advent

Since its premiere in 2003, the Wolfgangsee Advent has been one of the most beautiful Advent markets in Austria. Guests had the opportunity to traverse the lake from one splendidly decorated Advent location to the next with the ships of the Wolfgangsee lake fleet. In St. Gilgen, Strobl and St. Wolfgang, a varied and enchanting offer with a total of 150 Advent huts, crafts, nativity exhibitions, local specialities, music events and angel studio with post office awaited their visitors. Dates were from 23 November to 23 December 2018 and New Year’s Eve market.

Castles Advent Traunsee

At Seeschloss Ort and Landschloss Ort in Gmunden, the central focus points of the Christmas exhibition were the artistic exhibits and handcrafts of about 130 exhibitors. Visitors watched the production and found wonderful Christmas gifts here. The Programme was rounded off with daily concerts by singers and music groups from the region. The exhibition was open from 23 November to 16 December 2018 on Fridays (1 pm to 7 pm), on Saturdays and Sundays (11 am to 7 pm).

Advent in Mondsee

The St. Michael’s Basilica in Mondsee is a unique Baroque jewel and the sparkling centre of the “Advent in Mondsee” each year. Directly in front of its imposing portal, the beautifully decorated forecourt was all about the culinary specialities of the Mondsee lake region. In the impressive cloister of the former monastery, exhibitors from the region presented local crafts such as ceramics, jewellery, lambskin products and much more. Dates were from 30 November to 23 December 2018 on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Ischl craftsmen Christmas market

The former, splendid drinking hall in the centre of Bad Ischl is an architectural jewel from the early 19th century. Every year in Advent, it houses the traditional “Christkindlmarkt der Ischler Handwerker” (Ischl craftsmen Christmas market). From 23 November to 20 December 2018, local traders presented their products such as hats, clothes and wooden art.

“Old Town Steyr” Advent market

The traditional Advent market took place daily from 23 November to 23 December 2018 (11 am to 9 pm) on the historic town square of the Christ Child city of Steyr. One of the special highlights of the ‘Christkindlstadt’ Christmas programme was the “Schmiedeweihnacht” on the 8th and 9th of December 2018. On Friday 7th December 2018, blacksmiths will be celebrated! 40 blacksmiths from the region showed their unique craft at the open fire. Other special features were the Advent brass band and the Steyr Christ Child.

Christmas market promenade in Steyr

Around 30 exhibitors on the promenade pampered visitors from 23 November to 23 December 2018 from Friday to Sunday and on 22 & 23 December with culinary delicacies such as local gnocchi, raclette bread, Ischl gingerbread, potato locks, waffles, pine schnapps, Christmas cider, punch and mulled wine. The finely-selected assortment surely also included a few Christmas gifts, such as honey products or candles from beeswax.

Advent in the Innviertel region

Atmospheric Advent and Christmas markets, tempting aromas emerging from the Christmas bakeries, lively traditions from the Krampus Run to Advent singing and historical handcrafts.
