The little book “Silent Night! Holy Night!”

On the trail of the world's most popular Christmas carol

“Silent Night! Holy Night!”, originally written as a poem by Joseph Mohr and then turned into a lullaby with the help of Franz Xaver Gruber’s melody, is sung by around two billion people every year for Christmas and in over 300 different languages and dialects.

In her book, which was released in November 2017, author Franziska Lipp presents the most important and most beautiful towns and villages surrounding the most popular Christmas song in the world in SalzburgerLand, Upper Austria and Tyrol. The author has known the song since childhood.

“I grew up in Golling, where Joseph Mohr briefly worked as an assistant priest. Hallein is not far and as a child, I grew up with the awareness that there was a Silent Night district around here that had to do with the song and with Christmas.”

The book is an ideal read for all of those who would like to gain a quick but extensive overview of the subject. It describes the historical background of the song’s creation story and its most important protagonists. Additionally, the book includes tips for a custom journey through the 13 Silent Night Municipalities in SalzburgerLand, Tyrol and Upper Austria, as well as three classic Christmas recipes.

Press commentary

“It’s hard to believe how much information can be included in such a little book. Franziska Lipp distances herself from the usual corny tales and presents the song and its creators in their proper historical context. The book is gorgeously illustrated and contains tips for visiting the various Silent Night Municipalities. There are even a few culinary classics included that are suitable for any season. An ideal souvenir for (pre-)Christmas visits!”

The books in Servus’ little book series may be little, but they make for some brilliant reading. This includes “Silent Night”, appropriately released for the Christmas season, which is about what is perhaps the most famous Christmas song ever. Franziska Lipp provides an introduction to the song’s genesis during the difficult 19th century, presenting the most important and most beautiful towns and villages around the world’s most famous Christmas song in SalzburgerLand, Upper Austria and Tyrol.
